Eating out can get expensive especially if your paying for two people. Every relationship handles money differently, but at some point, you’ll probably find yourself picking up some higher than expected bills. Be transparent with your partner about your finances and know how much you want to pay and how often you want to go out. Be reasonable. Don’t expect to only pay for fast food dates when your SO picks up the nicer bills, but work to find some fun and generous ways to save some money.
Having open conversations about money can help you save money without feeling cheap. You may love the experience of going out instead of cooking every night and enjoying a night out without breaking the bank. Sure, eating at home will (almost) always be cheaper, but there are ways you can try and save some money.
Split a meal
Going somewhere with big portions is always a great idea to get a meal split. My boyfriend and I might go out and split something at a higher price point. We typically plan on getting a dessert to share or making a box of brownies when we get home. It may not be the most nutritious, but you can save a little bit of cash.
Figure out the happy hour/special nights
Most restaurants have some sort of happy hour or discount night so look at your local restaurants Instagram for ½ off appetizers or $5 burger nights. One of our favorite restaurants is a sushi joint. Before 5, you get ½ off appetizers and select rolls. It’s great for a late lunch or taking your grandma on a date.
Agree to a certain number of outings a month you will pay for
It’s important to me that I stay on budget. This seems harsh, but you have to stay in control of your money. For me, I plan to pick up the tab twice a month (we typically have one date night a week). My boyfriend knows this, so he picks up two tabs and I pick up two tabs. I can easily budget when I know how many times and how much we normally spend.
Have an apps night
These days appetizers are made for the whole table to enjoy. It’s a great way to make dinner just a little cheaper. Get the experience of going out while only paying a few dollars for chips and dip. Bonus points if apps are half-off.
Remember to always be considerate of the waiter’s time. It’s best to do this on a weeknight when restaurants are waiting to seat other higher-paying customers.
Go out for dessert
Similar to apps night, my boyfriend and I love love to go to BJ’s for two-dollar pizookies– which we share. It’s a great way to save money and get the experience of going out. Plus, you’d be surprised how amazing your favorite place’s desserts are when you aren’t already stuffed!
Thoughts to take out…
Eating out and exploring new places is a great way to connect with your partner, and you shouldn’t have to break the bank for it. You can’t control the prices set, but try and use some the skills above to save you money on dining out.
